Within 1 month of his purchase, Jim was campaigning his 1.6 Liter type 1960 Porsche 356 B 616/7 flat four-powered 356 in Porsche Club of America races. From the old days when you drove whatever you raced to and from the track to his final race at Road Atlanta in 2018, this period-correct, Super 90 roadster accumulated over 14,000 miles on the track and won 126 first, second, and third place medals. For years, Beal Hardy of Check Point Auto worked hand-in-hand with Jim to keep this Porsche track-ready including countless hours spent on the water-cooled drum brakes. Jim’s wife Mona Matthews and his two son’s Sean and Evan are now faithful stewards of this heirloom.

No one owns a car for 53 years without a fight and this classic is no different. The first time it was stolen, Jim found it a few blocks away because the thief did not know how to drive it. The second time it was stolen he found it at a dune-buggy “chop shop” in rural Georgia. When his son asked how the 356 came back in his possession, Jim ominously responded: “I got it back.” And, we are glad he did.
