About the 1949 DeSoto
In the late 1970s, young Robert Page was a familiar face at AACA meets in southeastern Virginia, attending car shows with his grandfather, Robert Sommers. Sommers, who began collecting classic cars a year after Page was born, gifted his grandson a life membership to the AACA by his fifth birthday. This early exposure ignited Page’s lifelong passion for vintage cars, with fond memories of his grandfather’s 1928 Dodge and 1939 V-12 Packard.
In 1979, Sommers acquired a 1949 De Soto S-13 Custom, affectionately named “Blue,” which would become a cherished family heirloom. After Sommers passed away in 2004, Page and his mother rescued Blue from being sold cheaply and drove it from Virginia to Georgia, a journey that strengthened Page’s connection to his grandfather’s legacy. Page maintained Blue in its original condition, regularly driving it and sharing the experience with his daughters, honoring his grandfather’s memory.
Following Robert Page’s own passing, his sister sold Blue to Michael, the current owner, who continues to preserve its legacy. Michael ensures the De Soto is driven and appreciated, maintaining its historical significance and honoring the memories of both Robert and his grandfather, Robert Sommers. This classic car remains a testament to the enduring love for vintage automobiles that started with a grandfather’s passion.
